I would describe myself as a figurative painter. The training I received was very rigorous, at a time when Art Schools generally were obsessed with experimentation. The work we did at Edinburgh was firmly grounded in Life Drawing and Painting, Composition and mostly Mediaeval and Renaissance art history.
I still have a passion for both painting and art history, and in fact most of my lecturing career was as an art history tutor. Studying two separate disciplines at one and the same time wasn’t easy – but looking back, I’d definitely do it again.
I prefer to work directly from the subject if I can, and having been brought up in industrial S. E. Lancashire in a period of post- war change, I still have a preference for urban themes. I experiment with all kinds of painting and graphic media but particularly oil, and the abstract qualities of composition are a major consideration.
